What We Learned at COP28: A Ground-Level View on Global Climate Action

- December 28, 2023
In December 2023, COP28 convened in Dubai bringing together global leaders, climate experts, and innovators with one shared mission: finding solutions to carbon emissions, resource scarcity, and climate inequality.
ESUPPLY’s role as a media partner allowed us to see firsthand how this global event connects to grassroots work in South Africa, and one truth stood – solutions must be inclusive to be effective. In this article we explore the key discussions arising, from high-level discussions on Loss and Damage funding to pledges for renewable energy scaling.
The Rise of Inclusive Climate Action
One of the most compelling takeaways from COP28 was the emerging consensus that true climate action must be inclusive and community-centered. During the summit official language called for a phase-down of fossil fuels marking “the beginning of the end” of the fossil fuel era (UNFCCC). What stood out to us was how this macro-level shift mirrors our micro-level impact: every solar kit, water-saving device, or e-mobility charger in the hands of a South African homeowner chips away at grid dependency and reliance on fossil fuels.High-level pledges—such as Loss and Damage funding and clean energy finance—are critical, but without buy-in from local communities, they risk becoming aspirational rather than actionable.
Financing That Supports Local Innovators
COP28 showcased new financial mechanisms aimed at supporting projects in vulnerable regions. These funds offer opportunities—but they also come with complexity. As a lean, female-led social enterprise, ESUPPLY requires practical, accessible finance to scale. Our presence at COP28 helped us understand how decentralised clean energy and local innovation can be funded without traditional institutional barriers.
Just Energy Transition as Human Right
Another key theme at the summit was recognizing energy access as an essential right. This framing resonated deeply with ESUPPLY’s mission. We observed firsthand how load shedding—and the reliance on high-cost, high-emission alternatives—exacerbates inequality. ESUPPLY was born from this very injustice. By distributing affordable solar, water-saving kits, and e-mobility tools, we’re not only addressing a gap—we’re asserting energy as a fundamental baseline for dignity and development.
Circularity at Scale
COP28 didn’t shy away from addressing resource depletion. Discussions on circular economy strategies underscored the importance of second-life product markets—like ESUPPLY’s refurbished solar lightweight solar systems, water heaters, and appliances. Circularity isn’t just good for the planet—it makes essential technology affordable for those who need it most.
Local Voices, Global Solutions
Perhaps most encouraging was the prioritisation of including local voices and frontline leadership in COP28 conversations. The summit amplified testimonials and case studies from community-led initiatives—validation for ESUPPLY’s approach, which centers South African voices and lived experience in product design and education strategies.
Applying COP28 Today at ESUPPLY
At ESUPPLY, COP28 wasn’t just inspirational—it was instructive. Here’s what we’re implementing:
- Scaling our Sustainable Champions to cover more provinces by end of 2025.
- Designing a funding toolkit to match streamlined funds for grassroots clean-energy projects.
- Expanding our circular product range with more second-life solar devices.
- Building educational resources reflecting: sustainable living, community-level climate justice, access, and innovation.
Conclusion
COP28 was more than a global conference—it was a blueprint for change. It reaffirmed that the future of climate action hinges on equity, innovation, and local empowerment. ESUPPLY is committed to bringing COP28 insights home—shaping them into local solutions that create real impact. The summit may have ended in Dubai, but its relevance continues in every solar-lit home, water-saving device, and hopeful entrepreneur we serve.
